Rust is more of a threat than you may think!
Rust is a year round menace! If you live on the coastline, rust is a serious problem. High humidity and damp salty air, which are inevitable in these areas, accelerate the corrosion of motor vehicles. Rust is also a huge threat in many cold areas where salt is used to melt the icy roads. Driving on these salty roads accelerates vehicle rusting considerably. Vehicles used near factories which emit gaseous by-products are also at high risk of metal corrosion.
A hazard that is seldom recognized is the home garage! The combination of; an active gardener or a "do it yourselfer", the storing of cement, fertilizer, pool chemicals, acids, etc., a regular sweep that raises a cloud of dust, a wet car from the rain or a wash parked overnight, can lead to a rust equation that can be quite horrifying.
Even if your vehicle already has some type of spray-on type rustproofing or undercoating it will probably still rust. Cracking at the body joints, stone chips, peeling and brittleness of the undercoating can result in water getting trapped between the metal and the undercoating allowing rust to form where you can't see it until it's too late.
Serious "cancerous" rust seldom occurs on the outside of the vehicle, but instead forms where sponges, brushes and even most spray-on type rustproofing or undercoating applications cannot reach, that is the "boxed in" bodywork sections and channels such as door interiors, sills, seams, vertical framework and joints. All the washing, car wax and paint touch-ups in the world will not stop that nasty rust blister appearing underneath the pristine paintwork. Only stabbing or punching into it will reveal the seriousness of the problem when a large section of panel disintegrates into a mass of red debris and dust.
